Profile pictures in Internet Explorer 11

Internet Explorer 11 implements a concept called “Trusted Sites” that can cause issues when displaying profile pictures. Chrome, Firefox and Safari do not implement this feature and so are not impacted by it.

Internet Explorer 11 and Profile Pictures

A simple way to diagnose whether you are being impacted by the “Trusted Sites” is to view your organisation chart in Chrome. If you can see the profile pictures in Chrome but not in Internet Explorer then “Trusted Sites” is usually the cause.

To view your trusted sites open “Internet Explorer Options” and then select the “Security” tab.

Select, “Trusted Sites” and then clicking “Sites” will display a list of the current “Trusted Sites”.

This should be either completely empty OR contain the following URL’s

https://*.lync.com
https://*.microsoftonline.com
https://*.office365.com
https://*.outlook.com
https://*.sharepoint.com
https://login.windows.net
https://portal.office.com
https://*.teamorgchart.com

Certain Microsoft tools will automatically add items to Trusted Sites ( OneDrive, the Excel to SharePoint List upload tool, Skype for Business ).

Alternatively, if using the SharePoint Picture Source, set the source to be SharePoint (Cross Domain).
